Power of Music Series

These workshops has been approved for 0.6 CEU’s (6 contact hours) through the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work and are offered periodically. Each one is also available for those interested in contracting or sponsoring for their organization or area.

Integrating Music and Imagery into Group Work
This workshop introduces participants to the theory and application of using music and imagery for group work. This method for group work has been demonstrated to be effective for groups designed to assist people with cancer recovery, anxiety, depression, grief, addictions, spirituality, and creative expression, among other issues.

Music and Imagery in Clinical Practice
This workshop, based on the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music, introduces participants to the benefits of using music and imagery as an adjunct to traditional methods of therapeutic practice. Participants will have an opportunity to experience the therapeutic impact of music and to practice using a basic form of this method with supervised practice.

Rhythms of Transformation: An Introduction to the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music
This experiential workshop will introduce a therapeutic process with application for transforming health, emotional, relationship, career and spiritual challenges into empowering possibilities. Emphasis will be placed on the understanding of the homeopathic quality of music and it’s role as co-therapist. Participants will learn the basics of an initial GIM session and how to facilitate a session with skill practice in supervised dyads.

Music, Imagery and Archetypes
This workshop introduces participants to how archetypal work can be of clinical benefit and the ways music and imagery can support the exploration and development of archetypes. Archetypes will be discussed from the conceptual framework of Carl Jung and Carol Pearson’s Six Heroic Archetypes.

Creative Visioning for Individuals and Organizations
This experiential workshop utilizes creative visioning as a way to tap into solutions for individuals and organizations. This is an empowering method that facilitates positive change, growth, and movement towards goals.

Music and Mindfulness (also named Meditation and Music: Partners for Mindfulness Practice)
This workshop explores the concept of music meditation by introducing basic skills of mindfulness, meditation practices, and how music can provide a focus for meditation. Mindfulness meditation has been shown to be helpful with anxiety, depression, addictions, and reducing stress.

Music and Imagery in Healing and Wellness

This workshop introduces music and imagery as beneficial for physical and emotional healing and wellness. Participants will experience how music evokes a mind-body response that supports mindful awareness and emotional well-being. Clinical issues that are appropriate for this include: chronic illness (cancer, fibromyalgia,heart disease, diabetes, migraines), pre-surgery and post-surgery transitions, and stress reduction.

Awakening the Dream Within: Music, Dreams, Archetypes and Mandalas
This workshop presents an expressive arts integrated approach that involves the use of dream analysis, archetypes, music, and mandalas. Participants will take away practical methods to explore their dreams as a resource for creative solutions.
